1. Service Description

mitdown.ca is a free, open web interface for converting various file formats to Markdown. The service uses multiple conversion backends including MarkItDown, Docling, and Markit. This service is provided entirely free of charge, on an "as is" basis, without any warranties or guarantees of any kind, express or implied.

By using this service, you acknowledge that the operator of mitdown.ca assumes no responsibility or liability for the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any conversions performed.

2. Intellectual Property

The core conversion functionality is provided by third-party open-source libraries (MarkItDown, Docling, and Markit), each of which maintains its own licensing terms. This web interface is an independent implementation and does not claim any rights to the underlying projects.

  • The web interface design and implementation are original works
  • Each conversion backend is used under its respective open-source license
  • User-uploaded content remains the property of the respective users

3. Privacy & Data Usage

Files uploaded for conversion are:

  • Processed temporarily and not permanently stored
  • Automatically removed within one hour of conversion
  • Processed entirely on our servers

We maintain standard server logs (including IP addresses, browser information, and file metadata) for operational and security purposes.

This site uses third-party services including Google Analytics for usage statistics and Google AdSense for advertising. These services may collect data according to their own privacy policies.

4. User Responsibilities

Users of this service agree to:

  • Not upload malicious files or content
  • Not attempt to overload or disrupt the service
  • Respect the rate limits and file size restrictions
  • Only upload content they have the right to convert
  • Not attempt to circumvent any service limitations
  • Not use automated tools or scripts without permission

5. Limitations

The service has the following limitations:

  • Maximum file size: 100MB
  • Rate limits: 30 conversions per minute for single files
  • Batch conversion limit: 10 files per minute
  • Download limits: 60 downloads per minute
  • Contact form: 10 submissions per hour
  • Supported file formats vary by backend and include: PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, HTML, CSV, JSON, XML, EPUB, YAML, images, audio, ZIP, and plain text
  • No guarantee of service availability or uptime

6. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law:

  • The operator of mitdown.ca shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the service
  • The operator is not responsible for any loss of data, corruption of files, or inaccuracies in converted output
  • The operator makes no representations about the suitability, reliability, or accuracy of the service for any purpose
  • The service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranty of any kind
  • Use of this service is entirely at your own risk

You agree to hold the operator harmless from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your use of the service.

7. Indemnification
